Most men who want lingerie start the same way: they buy a women's set in what looks like the right size, and it fits badly. The bra rides up, the band digs in, the panties cut across the front. The usual conclusion is "I must have ordered wrong."
You probably didn't. Women's lingerie is drafted around a body shape you don't have, and no size on that chart fixes a pattern problem. Call it women's lingerie for men, female lingerie for men, or just feminine lingerie: the label changes, the pattern underneath usually doesn't, and the pattern is what fails you.
Four places where women's lingerie fails on a male body
It's worth being specific, because "it doesn't fit" hides four separate problems with four different answers.
The cup. A bra cup is a three-dimensional shape built to hold volume. With nothing to fill it, the cup collapses into a crease across the chest. That crease is the single most visible giveaway in photos. Going up or down a cup size does nothing, because the shape itself is wrong.
The band and the ribcage. Women's bra bands are sized to a ribcage that is typically narrower and rounder. A male ribcage is wider and flatter at the front, so the band that matches your measurement often sits too tight at the sides while the front gapes.
The front of the panty. Women's briefs are cut with a flat front. There is no fabric allowance where a male body needs it, which is why the panel pulls, the leg elastic rides, and the waistband tips forward.
Strap geometry. Shoulder straps on women's bras are set closer together, because the pattern assumes narrower shoulders. On broader shoulders they slide outward all evening.
What does work
Not everything needs replacing. Several categories are effectively unisex, and buying them from the women's side is completely reasonable:
- Garter belts. They sit on the waist and hips and don't care whose body it is. Just buy your waist measurement, not a dress size.
- Stockings and hold-ups. They are sized by height and thigh circumference. Check the thigh number first, because that's where most men need a size up.
- Chokers and neck pieces. There is no fit logic beyond length.
- Cupless and soft-cup bralettes. With no moulded cup, there's no collapse. This is the one bra category that crosses over cleanly.
What almost never works
Push-up and moulded cups fail because the foam holds a shape your chest won't fill. Balconette bras, for the same reason plus a wire that sits wrong. Anything with underwire drafted for a narrow ribcage. And most women's thongs, whose front panel is simply cut too small.
Two workarounds that are worth knowing
If you already own something and want it to work: extend the band with a bra extender (cheap, sold everywhere, adds 3-5 cm and fixes a lot of side pressure), and swap the straps to a longer pair or reposition them wider. Neither fixes a moulded cup, but both fix the two most common band-and-strap complaints.
Or: pieces drafted for the body you have
The other option is lingerie patterned for a male torso from the start: same lace, same sheer mesh, same colours, different draft. That's what we make. Cups are soft or open rather than moulded, bands are cut for a wider ribcage, panties have a front panel with actual allowance, and straps are set for broader shoulders.
A few starting points at different levels:
- Sissy sheer lace bra and panty set - $61, the simplest way to find out whether you like the feeling before committing.
- Pink lace bra and panty set - $66, our most-visited piece, soft cup and no wire.
- Black eyelash lace set with choker and garter - $76, harness-style bra rather than a cup, for anyone who wants structure instead of softness.
- Black lace open-cup bra with garter belt and thong - $116, a full four-piece set.
The whole range lives in women's lingerie for men, with more in lingerie sets and the lace collection.
How to measure yourself
Three numbers, a soft tape, over bare skin or thin underwear. Don't pull the tape tight. It should sit flat without compressing.
- Chest - around the fullest part, tape level under the arms.
- Waist - around the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above the navel.
- Hips - around the fullest part of your hips and glutes.
Then pick the size whose range covers your numbers, rather than converting from a shirt size. Our sizes run XS to 5XL:
| Size | Chest | Waist | Hips |
|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 82-88 cm (32-34") | 66-70 cm (26-27") | 86-90 cm (34-35") |
| S | 89-94 cm (35-37") | 71-76 cm (28-30") | 91-96 cm (36-38") |
| M | 95-102 cm (38-40") | 77-82 cm (30-32") | 97-102 cm (39-40") |
| L | 103-109 cm (41-43") | 83-89 cm (33-35") | 103-108 cm (41-42") |
| XL | 110-117 cm (44-46") | 90-98 cm (36-38") | 109-114 cm (43-45") |
| 2XL | 118-124 cm (47-49") | 99-104 cm (39-41") | 115-120 cm (45-47") |
| 3XL | 125-130 cm (50-52") | 105-110 cm (42-44") | 121-126 cm (48-50") |
| 4XL | 131-138 cm (52-54") | 111-118 cm (44-46") | 127-134 cm (50-53") |
| 5XL | 139-146 cm (55-57") | 119-126 cm (47-50") | 135-142 cm (53-56") |
Between sizes, take the larger one. Garters and straps adjust downward, fabric doesn't stretch upward. Full details and mask and jewelry sizing are on our size guide.
Fabrics, and how they behave
Lace is the most forgiving: it has give in both directions and it drapes rather than clinging, which flatters a flat chest instead of exposing it. Sheer mesh sits closer to the body and shows more line, so it rewards an accurate size. Satin has the least give of the three, so with satin, measure twice.
Three ways people actually buy this
For yourself, privately. Start with one soft-cup set in a colour you like. Nothing complicated, nothing with a wire. If it becomes a habit, build from there.
For a partner, as a gift. Get their chest, waist and hip numbers if you can. If you can't, a garter belt and stockings are the safest gift, because those fit a wide range and don't depend on cup shape at all. Our Christmas gift guide goes through this in more detail, including how to work out his size without asking and which pieces fit anyone.
For going out. Layer it. A lace bralette under a mesh top, or a set worn under an open shirt, reads deliberate rather than exposed.
Care
Hand wash in cold water and lay flat to dry. Machine washing is what destroys lace and elastic, not wearing it. Store flat rather than folded so the lace doesn't crease along one line.
The short version
Women's lingerie fails on a male body for pattern reasons, not size reasons. Garter belts, stockings, chokers and soft-cup bralettes cross over fine. Cups, wires and thong fronts do not. Measure chest, waist and hips, buy by those numbers, and start with lace before mesh or satin.
