On a dance floor the practical test matters as much as the look. Cotton soaks up sweat and stays wet. Mesh dries quickly, and a bodysuit stays in place when you move, which a tucked shirt never does.

A bar is a different room from a club. Nobody expects a look, and nobody is grading you. If you want one detail that shows you made an effort, keep it small: a sheer mesh tank under an open shirt, or a silver chain body harness over a plain black tee. You can button the shirt back up on the way home.
Themed and fetish nights: read the dress code first
Many gay parties have specific themes (fetish nights, neon parties, or drag events). Check the event description and choose an outfit that fits the theme.
On fetish nights this is more than advice. Many of them enforce a dress code at the door, and street clothes can get you turned away. The event page usually lists what counts: leather, rubber, sports gear, uniform or underwear. Pick one and commit to it. One or two pieces you are comfortable in work better than a full costume bought the day before.
